Mindfulness Practice and the Promotion of Mental Health
As mindfulness meditation grows increasingly popular it is easy to lose sight of the fact that teaching it to people with mental health disorders requires additional oversight and responsibility. Some of this comes from a history of vulnerable populations being offered Great and Desperate Cures (to quote Elliot Valenstein) and also from the recognition that some conditions undermine the very attentional networks that are required for practice. We will review the value of treatment protocols, evidence and training in acting as safeguards teaching mindfulness to people with a mental health condition. We will also emphasize the importance of training and how to teach effectively whether in person or online. Discussion with Patricia Rockman MD, CCFP, FCFP, Centre for Mindfulness Studies and Zindel Segal PhD, U of Toronto.
