Sitting with Suffering: Mindfulness at End-of-Life
Apr 02, 2026
LIVE Workshop: Tuesday, May 26, 2026
End-of-life care often brings clinicians into close contact with suffering—not only in their clients, but within themselves. In this workshop, Celina Carter, PhD, MN, RN, explores how helping professionals can understand and sit with suffering through a contemplative lens.
Participants will examine how suffering extends beyond physical pain to include psychological, relational, and spiritual dimensions, and how Western medical perspectives sometimes differ from contemplative understandings.
The workshop will also explore how threat responses and subtle aversion to suffering can arise in clinicians, and how unexamined avoidance can limit our capacity to remain present. Through reflection and mindfulness-based inquiry, participants will learn ways to turn toward suffering with greater awareness, compassion, and steadiness in end-of-life care.
In this workshop, you will:
-
Describe the multidimensional nature of suffering at end of life and explore how contemplative and compassion-focused perspectives can deepen clinicians’ understanding of suffering beyond physical pain.
-
Engage in a guided inquiry practice that helps clinicians recognize thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and meaning-making processes when encountering suffering.
-
Apply micro-awareness practices to recognize clinician threat responses, empathic strain, and cumulative grief, supporting a more sustainable and compassionate presence in end-of-life care.
Tuesday, May 26th, 2026 from 4:00 - 5:30 PM ET. Zoom. In your timezone: 1 PM PT, 9 PM BST, 10 PM CEST
