Managing Insomnia with Mindfulness-Based Inquiry and Practices for Racing Thoughts

member workshops Jan 22, 2026

LIVE Workshop: March 31, 2026

Chronic insomnia is often maintained by a vicious cycle in which increased effort to sleep leads to greater frustration and arousal. This workshop introduces elements from a mindfulness-based approach to insomnia (MBTI) designed specifically to address sleep-related arousal in chronic insomnia.

Participants will explore how mindfulness differs from other behavioral treatments for insomnia by cultivating present-moment awareness rather than following prescribed rules. Key concepts such as sleepiness vs. fatigue are clarified, helping clinicians support clients in recognizing genuine physiological sleep cues rather than following strict behavioral rules, which can increase anxiety and maintain insomnia. Mindfulness practices cultivate interoceptive awareness, allowing clients to develop a first-person understanding of when the body is truly ready for sleep.

The workshop includes mindfulness-based inquiry approaches to identify sleep cues and a Trainspotting Meditation to support decentering from racing thoughts. Designed for helping professionals seeking a practical, experiential, and evidence-informed approach to working with chronic insomnia.

Live Workshop: Tuesday, March 31st 2026 - 4:00 - 5:30 PM ET. Zoom. In your timezone: 1:00 PM PT / 9:00 PM GMT / 10:00 PM CEST.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Understand how chronic insomnia is sustained by a vicious cycle of effort, heightened arousal, and misinterpreted sleep cues, and how cultivating mindful awareness can help individuals step out of this cycle by reconnecting with the body’s natural signals for sleep.

  • Explore the Trainspotting Meditation to support clients in relating differently to racing thoughts.

  • Use mindful inquiry to build interoceptive awareness, helping clients distinguish sleepiness from fatigue and take mindful action through informed decisions about time in bed.
