HALT Framework for Relapse Prevention and Harm Reduction
Sep 29, 2025
LIVE Workshop: Tuesday, October 21, 2025
Relapse prevention and harm reduction often emphasize the HALT framework—Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired—as a simple, memorable check-in tool to recognize emotional and physical states that heighten vulnerability. By cultivating mindful attunement, the HALT framework can help prevent impulsive and reactive decision-making, creating space for healthier responses. At the same time, awareness of these states can surface difficult emotions such as guilt or shame, which may make change challenging to sustain.
In this experiential workshop with Dr. Farah Jindani, we will expand on the traditional HALT framework by incorporating gratitude and reconnection, which serve as protective factors that can provide anchors of support. These compassion-based approaches can provide a more substantial container for cultivating self-awareness, helping clients to notice what is arising and anchor in protective factors, meet needs with healthier strategies, and build capacity over time.
Designed for helping professionals, this session blends guided practice, reflection, and a practical worksheet. Participants will leave with concrete tools to help clients use the HALT framework and gratitude as accessible, empowering protective anchors for recovery, harm reduction, and self-regulation—adaptable across diverse recovery contexts.
